Cooperation under democracy and authoritarian norms

چکیده
There is ample evidence for a “democracy premium”. Laws that have been implemented via election lead to a more cooperative behavior compared to a top-down approach. This has been observed using field data and laboratory experiments. We present evidence from Chinese students and workers who participated in public goods experiments and a value survey. We find a premium for top-down rule implementation stemming from people with stronger individual values for obeying authorities. When participants have values for obeying authorities, they even conform to non-preferred rule. Our findings provide strong evidence that the efficiency of political institutions depends on societal norms. * Acknowledgements: We are thankful to Qingchao Wang, Wei Yuan, Xiangdong Sun, Fei Xiong, Wei Tang, Fei Yang and Qian Wan for their enthusiastic research assistance. This paper examines how authoritarian legislative institutions affect regime survival. When legislative institutions and party systems help protect the interests of authoritarian elites in new democracies, the...
متن کاملDeterminants of attitudes towards democracy in authoritarian states
According to survey results, almost all over the world – even in most authoritarian states – the support for democracy is nowadays relatively high. However, skeptical opinions exist about the substantial foundations of these attitudes. While a lot of studies about the MENA-region deal with determinants of the consistency of authoritarian regimes, only a few studies have been conducted on the de...

Throughout its short history, federal relations in Russia have been dominated by extra-legal political and economic relations rather than constitutionalism and the rule of law. Federalism and regional democracy have al...
